Don't Read My Book!

New problems. New things to worry about. New things to mark.

It has come to my attention, and why it surprises me I’m not sure, that people have been reading my book.

Now, yes, I know. I had sort of expected this. And yes, I know, it is surely a good thing. I am assuming that these people who are reading the book have paid for the book and so surely riches cannot be far away.

However.

People are reading my book. At work, sat in the staff room, people are telling me how far through they are, asking me questions, and saying nice things. This is all very good, I am aware of this.

But I don’t know how to respond. I find myself changing the subject. I find myself avoiding the staff room.

Because I know what’s coming.

Although it’s all nicely, darkly comic to begin, it goes a bit … well … odd, toward the end. It all goes a bit… twisted… toward the end.

And of course, in all my wisdom, I wrote in the first person.

And so people think that it’s about me.

This worries me.

If you’re one of the few that’s read it, you’ll understand why.

You’ll understand why the thought that my parents might read it terrifies me. You’ll understand why I envision some awkward conversations.

To those of you buying my book: Don't read it, just stroke the cover a bit...

It goes 'a bit' odd? 'A bit' :)

It's ok, fear not, my chosen one. We now all know just how your mind works ...

Ever worked in a dvd rental place before?

la la la

... please don't kill me.

Yup, this is the one thing that worries me about getting my book published - people I know reading it. I think it worries me even more than amazon and press reviews (and those worry me a far bit I tells ya). Whenever my mum reads one of my short stories she asks, "Is that based on me?" - even when it's not - so at least I don't have to worry about that (main character in book has dead parents). It's everyone else I'm worried about *wibbles*

Ha. Yes. Your parents don't know how it ends yet?

Caroline - If i could figure out the required buttons for a frowny/slightly threatening smily I'd do it... I would. But I can't. All i know is this one :) which is less effective at demonstrating my fury, but more accurately shows my giggling at your comments... x

Calistro - I'm pleased I'm not the only one. I hate that people I know are reading it. Right now. People I've never met/will never meet can read it. But no one else... Ever!

B - No. No they don't. And my mam is about half way through... I've not my dad his yet, can't imagine why...

You know what my reactions were - and welcome to the fun of stopping my parents ever reading it! For those who read it who have worked in a dvd rental place - its all - ok not all - but a lot of it is scarily familiar. We are gonna have to work on you talking to people about it tho! *Sharpens a stick in readyness* *Dips it in readybrek...*
*Waves it threateningly*

nice blood splatter btw

Haha, book anxiety's well funny. Have the local press got a hold of you yet? That's my worst, worst nightmare.

My Grandparents have threatened to disown me if I'm not 'Matthew' over 'Matt'. I've also explained that it's sweary, and that I'll have to black-mark everything throughout. And, since Mrs Matt's parents are quite conservatively Christian, and I slightly blow up a church, well. That'll cause some ruffles.

I'm dead excited to read it Nik.

Keep trucking!

Vix - I'm great at promotion, please note the title of the post... no need for pointy cereal smeared sticks...

Matt - I'm now massively intrigued by your book too... church burning, swearing, something to do with hoovers ( i think, or did i make that up? ) It's gonna be goooood...

I've got to the twisted distrubing part of your book and I have to say it works well with the rest of the novel. So worry not. Oh btw you won this week's WW, so come collect your award.

He, he, he.
I totally relate. I stil gibber if anyone asks me about my book and try to hide if they've actually read it.
If you have written in the first person, they will definitely think it is you, no matter what you say.
Nonetheless - enjoy it all (every minute, even the scary bits)
I am so looking forward to reading 9987

DJ - Thanks, but you say that now... Just give it a few more chapters, it gets worse i guarantee it...

Megan - Yus, well, see thats the thing, it's in First Person Present Tense. So blatently, despite my objections and denials all i get is "It's YOU!!"... S'not good...
